How to Cold Plunge: A Beginner's Guide to Building a Cold Therapy Routine.

Transform Your Wellness with a Cold Plunge Routine.

For centuries, people have embraced water as a method of healing, renewal, and transformation. Cold plunging, a practice once reserved for athletes, is now gaining popularity as a holistic wellness ritual that restores balance, clears the mind, and revitalizes the body.

By making cold plunging part of your regular self-care practice, you can experience benefits like improved recovery, relief of sore muscles, and mood enhancement. Beyond the physical, immersing yourself in cold water can help you release stress, enhance mental acuity, and allow you to meet life's challenges with grace and resilience.

If you're curious about how cold therapy can enhance both body and mind, this article will walk through the essentials — why it works, how to begin, and how to create a cold plunge routine that is both enjoyable and transformative.

How Cold Plunging Works: Wellness Benefits for Mind and Body.

If you're in search of calm, health, or renewal, this practice invites you to be present, embrace the moment, and emerge transformed. According to insights from the Huberman Lab at Stanford University, cold exposure can lead to improvements in the mind and body. Sounds good, right? Let's look at how regular cold exposure can elevate your wellness routine in just a few minutes a week:

Cold Therapy Can Soothe Aches and Aid in Muscle Recovery.

Cold plunges may help support muscle recovery by providing a cooling effect that can soothe tired muscles after physical activity. Whether you're recovering from a challenging Pilates session or unwinding after a long day, this practice helps your body reset, so you can return to the lifestyle you love feeling refreshed and restored.

Clear Your Mind & Find Your Center.

A few moments in cold water can help quiet mental noise, ease stress, and enhance focus. Here's how it happens: Based on a study published by The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, cold plunging can naturally boost neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine, which are linked to enhanced mood, motivation, and mental sharpness. Many cold plungers emerge with a sense of calm and well-being that remains with them for hours after they leave the water.

Enjoy More Energy to Embrace Your Personal Journey.

Cold plunges can invigorate your body by enhancing its natural cooling processes, helping you feel more alert and recharged. Depending on your personal sensitivity to cold and overall health, it may leave you feeling refreshed, transformed, and ready to step into your day.

Build Resilience Inside and Out.

Cold immersion is like a “spa retreat” for your nervous system. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health supports the hypotheses that by consistently exposing yourself to the cold in a controlled environment, you help your body and mind to adapt to stress more effectively. The study found that cold therapy could help with your overall stress response, allowing you to feel calmer and more in control in and out of the water. When done consistently, pushing past mental hurdles in cold water can help you navigate life's challenges more gracefully and easily.

Getting Started: What You Need for a Cold Plunge.

Before you take the plunge, be sure to set yourself up for success. Here's what you'll need:

  • A cold plunge tub – A dedicated cold plunge, like the Caldera Spas Emerge Cold Plunge, ensures optimal temperature control and ease of use.
  • An electrical connection – If using a powered plunge tub, make sure you have a proper electrical setup.
  • A robe or warm clothes – Your body will need to warm up after getting out of the water. Have a cozy robe, towel, or even a heated blanket ready.
  • Music and aromatherapy to enhance your experience – Set the stage for a transformative experience with soothing music and calming scents.

Creating a Cold Plunge Ritual That Works for You.

Incorporating cold plunging into your wellness regimen can provide incredible benefits — but the key is consistency. Whether you're an athlete looking to recover faster, someone seeking a mental reset, or just curious about the hype, starting small and building up gradually is the best and safest way to benefit from this refreshing wellness ritual.

Cold Plunge Q&A: What Beginners Need to Know.

What's the best way to start cold plunging?

Start slowly to allow your mind and body to get used to the cold water. Begin with water temperatures between 50-60°F and limit your first few times to 1-2 minutes (or less). As your body adapts, you can gradually extend your duration and lower the water temperature.

How long should I stay in the water?

The most important thing to do when cold plunging is to listen to your body. Everyone has a different tolerance to the cold, so don't compare yourself to any else. Give yourself time to get used to your new wellness practice. Here are recommended guidelines to follow when starting a cold plunge routine.

  • Beginners: Start with 1-2 minutes at a comfortable temperature (about 60°F).
  • Intermediate: Work your way up to 2-3 minutes as tolerance builds.
  • Advanced: Many plungers aim for 3-5 minutes and may do a couple of sessions, warming up in between.

Whether you're taking the plunge for the first time or the fiftieth, always pay attention to your body and don't push yourself. If you experience shivering, numbness, dizziness, headaches or neck pain, exit the water and allow your body to slowly come back to its normal temperature.

How often should I plunge?

Beginners should start with 2-4 sessions per week, gradually building tolerance. To start, aim for a total of 11 minutes per week to provide optimal benefits while minimizing the risk of overexposure. Consistency is key. Regular practice will help your body adapt and allow you to maximize results.

What temperature should the water be?

When it comes to water temperature, start slow and work your way down over time. Colder isn't always better — it's important to find the balance between maximizing wellness benefits and finding a temperature your body will respond best to.

  • Beginners: Start at 50-60ºF to allow your body to adapt.
  • Intermediate: Progress to 45-50ºF, as you become more comfortable.
  • Advanced: Some experienced plungers go as low as 40°F, but it's important to lower temperatures gradually and stay within your tolerance.

How can I make cold plunging easier?

Mentally reframe the experience by thinking of the initial discomfort as an opportunity to build calmness and resilience. Use slow, rhythmic breathing techniques to help you manage the shock and acclimate yourself to the cold. Deep inhales through the nose followed by slow, controlled exhales can help regulate your response. If the cold feels overwhelming at first, start at the higher end of the temperature range, around 55-60°F, and gradually work your way lower.

Plan a pleasant recovery ritual, such as wrapping up in a thick towel or robe, doing a few gentle stretches, or enjoying a warm cup of tea.

How can I enjoy my cold plunge safely?

Listen to your body. Cold exposure should challenge your mental and physical fortitude, but it should never feel overwhelming. Gradual adaptation is the safest approach. It's always wise to consult your doctor before taking on a new wellness activity.

  • Watch for warning signs. If you feel lightheaded, experience numbness, or start uncontrollably shivering, exit immediately.
  • Exit carefully. Cold water can affect coordination and muscle control. Move slowly and cautiously when stepping out.
  • Consider plunging with a partner or having someone nearby while plunging. This person can provide moral support or assist if you need help.
  • Warm up properly. Avoid sudden temperature changes immediately after plunging. Instead, dry off and change out of your wet swimsuit, put on a warm robe or comfortable clothing, and try some gentle movements like a short, meditative walk or yoga stretches to get your blood flowing.

Before starting any cold plunge routine, consult your doctor to ensure it is safe for you, especially if you have underlying health conditions, circulatory issues or sensitivity to cold exposure.

Transform Your Mind Body Wellness in Just Minutes a Day!

A cold plunge is more than a mental and physical reset — it's an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and embrace the present moment. Whether you're looking to reduce stress, enhance recovery, or cultivate resilience, making cold plunging part of your wellness routine can help you feel more vibrant, clear, and energized.

The Top 10 States for Yoga Lovers.

Yoga has become a way of life for many Americans, expanding well beyond its origins in India to become a popular practice that benefits both the body and mind. As more people come to appreciate yoga and practice it regularly, more yoga studios thrive in every state. The best states for yoga are those with ample opportunities for yoga lovers. To determine which states love yoga the most, we looked at the number of yoga studios per capita, the number of yoga instructors, and the level of search interest people have when it comes to all things yoga.

Here are our findings:

  • New York, California, and Colorado are the top three states for yoga lovers in the U.S.: New York has the highest search interest (76) and an impressive number of studios; California leads in the number of yoga teachers (5,514); Colorado has as many studios per capita as New York (2 per 100,000 people) and rivals California in search interest (62 versus CA's 61).

  • New York, Oregon, and Colorado residents are the most interested in yoga in the U.S.: New York's search interest is 76, Oregon's is 73, and Colorado's is 62.

The 10 U.S. States That Love Yoga the Most.

Yoga is an incredibly versatile activity because nearly anywhere you are, you can do your daily sun salutations and get into your flow. If you want a community experience and want to learn more poses — and how to do them correctly — yoga studios are a great option for your practice. The following states excel when it comes to the community aspect of yoga — that is, the number of studios, teachers, and people who are engaging in this amazingly healthy practice.

1. New York

New York isn't just a major cultural hub — it's also a major yoga hub, which is why it's ranked first on our list. The entire state, but particularly New York City, has a vibrant yoga culture, offering everything from traditional practices to innovative styles like rooftop and aerial yoga. The city's diversity and dynamic cultural scene make it a great place for yoga events, workshops, and teacher training programs.

Additionally, New York has the highest search interest in yoga of any state, indicating strong enthusiasm for this practice. As a final note, New York ranks number five in U.S. News & World Report's list of the states with the healthiest populations. It's not hard to imagine that the popularity of yoga plays a role in keeping the state healthy.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 3,160
  • Search interest: High (76)

2. California

California's yoga scene is thriving, which is why it secured the second spot on our list. Cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco have many studios with diverse yoga offerings, from traditional Hatha to cutting-edge hybrid styles. To put it in perspective, the state has 526 yoga studios and LA and SF are home to 63% of those studios.

Overall, it's also a great state for those who are seeking to learn. California has the highest number of registered yoga teachers of any state, so there are plenty of instructors to guide the Golden State's many students. Further, CA's sunny climate provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor yoga, especially in the southern half of the state.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 1 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 5,514
  • Search interest: Medium-high (61)

3. Colorado

Known for its enthusiasm for outdoor activities, Colorado ranks highly for yoga popularity. The Centennial State has a large number of yoga studios per capita, particularly in cities like Denver, which has 11 studios for every 100,000 people.

According to the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade, “We embrace a holistic approach to wellness, and the nation's wellness transformation starts here.” Colorado's interest in holistic health practices is reflected in its strong search interest for yoga topics. This high level of interest translates into a passion that makes it a top location for both residents and visitors looking to engage in yoga and wellness activities. Alongside its strong showing as the ninth healthiest state in the U.S., Colorado ranks number two when it comes to the healthiest states for older adults.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 1,695
  • Search interest: Medium-high (62)

4. Massachusetts

Massachusetts is a key state for yoga enthusiasts on the East Coast, thanks to its numerous studios per capita and high number of instructors. The presence of renowned centers like the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge adds to its appeal.

The Bay State ranks number one in U.S. News and World Report's list of the healthiest states, and for good reason. The state gets high scores on a number of wellness and fitness factors, including purposeful well-being, physical fitness, social health, and community. Simply put, Massachusetts prioritize wellness, and yoga is a big part of that focus. Plus, yoga is a perfect exercise option for a state where winters can be pretty cold, and the studio is a perfect place to warm up. This is especially true if you can find a studio that offers hot yoga classes — such as Bikram yoga, where the room is heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 1,593
  • Search interest: Medium (59)

5. Florida

Florida is a key player in the U.S. yoga scene, particularly due to its warm climate and beautiful beach locations, which are perfect for outdoor yoga sessions. The Sunshine State is second only to California in its number of registered yoga teachers, and it's home to the city with the highest number of yoga studios per capita, Miami.

From the myriad entertainment options to the hustle and bustle of a big city like Miami and the charged political atmosphere, Florida has a lot going on. So, it's no wonder that many Floridians choose yoga as a way to unwind. Plus, since Florida is a famous place to retire and live out your golden years in the sun, older residents benefit from the improvements in balance and circulation that yoga can bring.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 1 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 3,585
  • Search interest: Medium (50)

6. New Jersey

New Jersey is the most population-dense state in the country, and it's full of yoga lovers. The Garden State ranks as the second healthiest state in the nation and has an impressive number of yoga studios per capita for its 9.2 million residents. If you think about it, it's amazing that New Jersey is so stocked with studios. Yoga enthusiasts could attend classes in destinations like Philadelphia and the yoga capital of the U.S., New York City. But they can also remain in-state and make New Jersey a vibrant yoga hub in its own right.

Given that yoga has myriad therapeutic benefits, it should come as no surprise that New Jersey ranks number one in the nation when it comes to low rates of mental illness. The Garden State's fitness culture also sees it ranking as an incredibly healthy state overall. Wintery months and hectic traffic are likely to be part of the equation that drives residents indoors to do yoga and focus on their health.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 1,603
  • Search interest: Medium (45)

7. Virginia

Studios across the state have a diverse array of offerings — featuring classes that range from hot yoga to a combination of yoga and Pilates — to appeal to all yoga enthusiasts.

Perhaps nothing encapsulates Virginia's yoga culture more than Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville. Located in the heartland along the James River near Buckingham, Yogaville is a destination for retreats, classes, and community togetherness. There are multi-level Hatha classes, a daily noontime meditation, vegetarian meals, and the interfaith LOTUS Shrine. It's also known for its natural, rugged beauty, with picturesque places like the Great Smoky Mountains State Park and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It's also home to one of the state's most active yoga scenes. With about 961,000 residents and 40 yoga studios, Austin contains about 4 yoga studios per 100,000 people.

The city's diverse culture and booming wellness industry, combined with a recent influx of migration from places like California have contributed to the increasing popularity of yoga in Austin. The Top 10 Best States for Professional Yoga Instructors.

Looking at salary information, along with cost of living (COL) rankings, can provide insight into how desirable and lucrative it is to work as a yoga instructor in a particular state. The national average salary for yoga instructors is $69,965 per year, though some states offer much higher salaries in addition to a low cost of living. The cost of living is rated on a scale of 1 to 50, where 1 represents the lowest cost and 50 is the highest.

The 10 states with both the lowest cost of living and most competitive pay for yoga instructors are:

1. Indiana

The Hoosier State has great economic conditions for those who are seeking to open their own studio or take on a yoga teacher role at an established studio. It has the ninth lowest cost of living and instructors can earn a generous $70,995 per year teaching yoga.

Further, the state invested $487 million in community development in 2023, which grew to $12.6 billion through additional public, private, and nonprofit investments. Forbes ranked Indiana as the number one state to start a business in 2023. For a state where business is booming, the cost of living is low, meaning yoga instructors can live comfortably on a competitive salary.

2. Wyoming

Economically speaking, Wyoming is an interesting case and a fortuitous place for yoga teachers. It offers the 17th lowest cost of living in the entire country. Beyond that, the state's average salary sits at $60,610 per year while we discovered that yoga instructors earn $72,497 — about $12,000 more. This could be because it's a small state in terms of population and there aren't a ton of instructors to fill the demand for this role. Therefore, if you're certified and ready to help people practice, you're likely to earn a great salary that will go a long way in the Equality State.

3. Alabama

Amazingly, in Alabama, you can become a yoga instructor, spend 38% less than the national average on housing, and earn a wage that will see you living comfortably all around. Like Wyoming, the Yellowhammer State boasts a low cost of living — the 4th lowest in the nation — and yoga instructors are highly valued for their services, earning an average of $67,625 annually. You can fill an important niche as a yoga teacher in Alabama, and there's even the opportunity to live affordably on the coast, where you could lead outdoor sessions for people who want to connect with their inner yogi.

4. North Dakota

U.S. News & World Report has North Dakota ranking sixth in the nation when it comes to opportunity. It's also ranked 14th for its cost of living. This means yoga instructors have a great opportunity to teach in a state where the cost of living is relatively low, where they can earn $70,979 annually, and where recreation is a big part of the picture for many North Dakotans. The state's Office of the Governor reports that it led the nation in earnings in 2023, and there's a “laser focus on innovation.” As a yoga teacher, you can provide a restorative service to the people striving to innovate in the Peace Garden State and earn a good salary doing so.

5. Wisconsin

Dairy and beer aren't the only industries you can get into in Wisconsin. You can also make a good living teaching yoga to Wisconsinites who place a premium on recreation. Motorcycling, ATVs, boating, and fishing are big business here, but people can't always do them year-round due to cold winters. The state is ranked 20th for cost of living, but there's still demand for indoor recreation opportunities such as yoga, especially in a big city like Milwaukee. That could be a big reason why yoga instructors are able to make an average of $71,880 per year in the Badger State.

6. Pennsylvania

Although Pennsylvania sits square in the middle of the cost-of-living rankings at number 25, the average salary for yoga instructors of $76,102 annually is enough to make up for it. There are over one million small businesses in PA and it's the sixth largest economy in the U.S., meaning there are plenty of opportunities here for yoga teachers. This populous East Coast state has a lot of things yogis can enjoy, such as quality schools and gorgeous natural scenery. Longwood Gardens is particularly appealing, with its 40 indoor and outdoor gardens influenced by Italian, French, and English traditions.

7. Iowa

In Iowa, yoga teachers will find most of their opportunities in the capital city of Des Moines, which works hard to encourage economic development. But there's still plenty of room to branch out to smaller communities in this heartland state. It was rated the number one state for opportunity in 2021. That same year, CNBC reported that the Hawkeye State has one of the lowest costs of running a business. This is important for yoga studios that need to keep overhead low. Ultimately, Iowa's surprisingly low cost of living — 8th in the U.S. — mixed with competitive earnings — $65,074 per year, on average — makes this a great spot to teach yoga.

8. Mississippi

This Southern state consistently ranks highly as one of the most affordable places to live, with the 5th lowest cost of living in the country. And, perhaps surprisingly, the average yoga instructor can earn $63,972 each year — notably more than Mississippi's average salary, which ZipRecruiter reports is around $47,500 a year. Yogis can find a lot to enjoy in the beach towns along the Gulf Coast, where a laid-back pace translates perfectly to a yoga way of life.

9. South Dakota

The Mount Rushmore State is near the top for personal income growth and also has an impressively low unemployment rate in recent years. The thriving economy is reflected in yoga teacher's salaries here, an average of $67,082 annually, and also indicates that people may have more expendable income for services such as yoga instruction. Moreover, South Dakota has the 13th lowest cost of living in the country, which helps yoga instructors have some expendable income of their own. They can use it to visit the state's many natural attractions, such as Mount Rushmore and the Badlands.

10. New Mexico

New Mexico holds a special place in the nation for its scenic grandeur. About a third of the state is federally protected parkland and historic sites, such as Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Park. If you're a yoga teacher, the profusion of great outdoor sites pairs perfectly with the fact that you can earn a great salary of $69,096 per year. Given that the average salary in New Mexico is just over $62,000, yoga instructors are well-placed in the economic milieu. It doesn't hurt that New Mexico is ranked 19th for cost of living, either.

Finding Your Zen: Activities That Flow Well with Yoga.

Yoga can be incorporated into any lifestyle. Whether you're searching for a workout that strengthens your core or a contemplative self-care practice, there are flows for every mode. Further, the peace, restoration, and mindfulness you're cultivating don't have to stop at the mat. Certain activities are perfect extensions of yoga's core essence.

Soaking

It's no coincidence that hot tub yoga enhances the benefits of yoga by maximizing relaxation and coaxing out deeper stretches. Like yoga, soaking in hot water does wonders for the body and soul. A study from the International Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that thermal hydrotherapy reduces stress and encourages mental relaxation. Water immersion therapy improves blood flow and your ability to exercise. It can also reduce pain.

There are many ways to augment your yoga practice with the benefits of soaking in hot water. You can soak before or after your yoga routine — doing so beforehand will loosen you up and improve your ability to do stretches, as noted by the aforementioned study. Soaking afterward will enhance your relaxation. Try adding calming music, aromatherapy, and jets that massage your muscles. The study found that these things, in tandem with hydrotherapy, increase the body's healing capacity.

You can also take things up a notch by soaking in a hot tub equipped with the FreshWater Salt System. This all-natural, water sanitizing system uses salt to generate chlorine, meaning you're using fewer chemicals while enjoying more natural feeling water that is softer on your eyes and skin, while being easier to maintain. This isn't your only option, though. There are hot tubs to fit your budget and your yoga practice, whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner. You can also learn more about hot tubs and how they fit into your health and wellness routine.

Gardening and Eating Well

Gardening is much like the practice of yoga. Both activities involve cultivating focus and enhancing well-being. But as you concentrate on the plants and what they need — a balance of water, healthy soil, and sunshine — you find balance by stepping outside of yourself and caring for the world around you.

Gardening goes well with a yoga routine in so many ways. In the morning, you wake up with the sun to water your plants. You do your sun salutations or find your flow, getting balanced to move into the day with mindfulness. You clear your mind through breathwork and stretching, much as you clear the garden of weeds.

Further, you're growing plants that will nourish your body. Sitting down to a healthy post-yoga meal with those you love, and with food you've cultivated, is the essence of rejuvenation. As you combine this mindfulness of physical health with gratitude for the earth's amazing capacity to generate life, you grow closer to the essence of yoga.

Walking and Basking in Nature

The wonders of walking can't be overstated, and this form of exercise is the perfect complement to yoga. Yoga and walking could easily be viewed as two sides of one coin. Like yoga, walking can be meditative — and there is in fact a kind of meditation called walking meditation. This form of meditation is slow, even paced, and dedicated to a limited space. You focus on your steps and the flow of your movement to prioritize mindfulness and reduce stress.

Or, like hot yoga, you can use walking to get aerobic exercise and stretch your limbs. The health benefits of walking in this regard are numerous. It improves immunity, lessens joint pain, helps you maintain a healthy weight, and even lessens your craving for sugar.

Walking's versatility means you can stroll to the yoga studio or to a spot in nature where you engage your yoga flow. Do this on a regular, even a daily basis, and you'll find the compound benefits of walking and doing yoga will keep you young and energetic. Walk through the woods or a park and bathe in the glory of nature. All told, there are many activities that complement yoga, but the most meditative ones like soaking, gardening, and walking are natural extensions of the yoga way.

Methodology.

To determine the most yoga-friendly states, we focused on three main factors:

  • Number of yoga studios per capita: This indicates the number of Yoga Alliance registered yoga studios per 100,000 people, based on population data from the United States Census Bureau.
  • Number of yoga practitioners: This measures the total number of Yoga Alliance (YA) registered yoga teachers in each state.
  • Number of relevant Google searches per Google Trends data: Google Trends data provides insights into the topics that people are searching for. This data reflects the search interest in a topic. It measures how popular a term is in a particular place and timeframe in proportion to all other topics. Search data is normalized to allow for comparisons between different terms, locations, and time periods. The data is then ranked from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the highest level of interest in a term. If a term has a search interest of 100, it's particularly popular in that location and within that timeframe when compared to other topics.

All state and city population data was sourced from the United States Census Bureau, and yoga studio and instructor information was sourced from the Yoga Alliance registration directory.

When evaluating the best states for professional yoga instructors, we considered both the cost of living data and the average yoga instructor salary for each state. States with lower costs-of-living and higher salaries were included in our list.

Exploring the Rise of Aquatic Exercise and Stretching.

With the growing number of specialized classes offered at public pools, swim clubs, and fitness centers, aquatic fitness is becoming increasingly popular. Thanks to the unique properties of water, participants can enjoy a safe and effective workout without some of the challenges that come with an outdoor or gym workout.

For example, the resistance you feel when moving in water makes workouts more challenging and can deliver a larger calorie burn in less time. Additionally, water's natural buoyancy supports muscles and joints so there's generally less impact and risk of injury than with land-based exercises. These low-impact benefits make aquatic exercise an attractive choice for seniors, individuals with joint issues, and those recovering from injuries.

Furthermore, the temperature-controlled environment of a swimming pool or hot tub makes exercise more comfortable in a variety of weather conditions - so it's easier and more pleasant to stick to your wellness routine.

Let's dive into the world of aquatic exercise to see why it's making such a splash.

Table of Contents.

1. What is Aquatic Exercise?

A woman sits in a hot tub with her legs partially above the water, stretching her hamstrings.

Aquatic exercise refers to cardio, strength-building, or stretching performed in water that's typically waist- to chest-deep. These low-impact activities allow just about anyone, regardless of fitness level, age, or swimming ability, to stay active and improve their health, strength, and mobility. Popular exercises include water aerobics, aquatic yoga, water jogging, and resistance training, each of which leverages the unique properties of water for a safe and effective workout.

Many strength-building water exercises, like walking in waist-deep water, depend only upon resistance. However, there are also fitness accessories available to help enhance aquatic workouts and target specific muscle groups, including water dumbbells, kickboards, resistance bands, and pool noodles. These tools are designed to enhance water exercise by adding resistance to make muscles work harder without adding stress on the joints.

When deciding on the type of aquatic exercise to participate in, consider the size of the hot tub or pool you have access to. For example, a large swimming pool in a gym or community center will have ample space for water jogging and large group exercises, while smaller home pools are well suited for walking in place, kickboard workouts, and strength training with water weights and resistance bands.

Buying a hot tub for your home is a great way to make aquatic fitness more accessible. A local hot tub dealer can help you find the right shape, size, and price range for your needs. While a hot tub's smaller size limits the range of possible exercises, its warm water and molded seats are perfectly suited for resistance workouts, gentle stretching, and yoga poses. Plus, the hydrotherapy benefits of a hot tub could aid muscle recovery, making it easier to stick to your active routine.

2. Top Benefits of Aquatic Exercise.

An older woman is stretching after a yoga session, holding a bottle of water in her hands.

Regardless of your fitness levels or goals, there are plenty of good reasons to give water-based exercise a try:

  • Exercising in waist- to chest-deep water provides low-impact resistance, so you'll burn more calories in less time while fully engaging your muscles.
  • Aquatic exercise is efficient, providing a cardio workout that also boosts strength, endurance, and flexibility.
  • Extreme temperatures won't get in the way of your fitness ritual. Regardless of the weather, your pool will keep you cool in the summer, and can be heated to keep you comfortably warm in winter. Even some hot tub models offer a cool water mode that can be used for exercising or cool water soaking.
  • The buoyancy of water supports your body, so you can work out harder with less impact and risk of injury than traditional land exercises.
  • You have plenty of options to choose from. Look for an aqua fitness class at your local gym or community center, work out in your pool with water weights and resistance bands, or have fun working on flexibility with hot tub yoga moves and stretches.
  • Aquatic exercise is refreshing and fun - you'll feel like a kid again while you work toward achieving your fitness goals.

3. Enhance Your Heart Health.

A mother and son are running towards a hot tub on a sunny afternoon.

Certain studies have stated that aquatic exercise may be helpful for patients who are suffering from Coronary Artery Disease. Regular aerobic exercise can lower blood pressure and improve markers of cardiovascular health such as exercise capacity, vascular function and heart rate variability. The buoyancy of water provides a gentle, low-stress environment for this type of activity, aiding relaxation and helping reduce blood pressure. Additionally, aquatic workouts burn calories, contributing to weight loss and decreased fat mass, which also supports lower blood pressure. This combination of benefits makes aquatic exercise an excellent choice for maintaining heart health.

4. Stretching in Water Keeps You Fit and Flexible.

A man in workout attire stretches beside a Caldera Spa hot tub after exercising.

Regular stretching is an important part of any fitness routine because it enhances flexibility, improves range of motion, and reduces the risk of injuries. As we age, it's important to keep joints and muscles flexible and healthy. Without regular stretching, muscles can shorten and become tight, with limited range of motion. This can impair the ability to participate in sports and other activities, and could increase the risk of joint pain, strains, and muscle soreness.

To stay flexible and mobile, it's best to commit to more than just the occasional stretch. Dedicating a few minutes each day to water stretching exercise in a hot tub is an easy and effective way to see consistent results. The warmth of the water helps relax muscles and increase blood circulation, while the water's buoyancy reduces strain on joints, making it easier to perform stretches safely. This winning combination of heat and buoyancy creates an optimal environment for enhancing flexibility, alleviating muscle tension, and providing the benefits of stretching in a comfortable, enjoyable environment.

5. Begin and End Your Session with a Stretch.

During aquatic exercise, your muscles are cushioned by the water, so you won't feel the impact in the same way you would if you were running or exercising on land. However, the muscles are still working just as hard against the water's resistance, which is why it's important to stretch before and after water-based activities. Perform dynamic (moving) stretches before your session to warm up and prepare your muscles for the exercises. Static stretching (where you hold the stretch) after your workout will do wonders to flush out lactic acid and soothe tight muscles, and if there's a hot tub available, a rejuvenating hydrotherapy massage will feel great while loosening joints and aiding muscle recovery.

6. Explore Popular Group Fitness Programs.

For a workout that blends fitness with fun, check out one of the trending water-based fitness classes at your local gym or community pool. Popular aquatic fitness programs combine the low-impact resistance benefits of aquatic fitness with the social aspect of exercising with friends.

Aqua Zumba, a popular class for all levels, combines Zumba dance moves with water resistance, creating an energetic workout that's easy on the joints. For a more advanced option, Hydro Power focuses on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in the water, incorporating sprints, jumps, and resistance training to build strength and endurance. These programs appeal to a range of individuals, from those seeking a guided, low-impact environment for rehabilitation to exercise enthusiasts looking for a challenging alternative to their regular routine.

7. Water-Based Fitness for Everyone.

A mother, grandmother, and young girl are laughing together in a hot tub.

Aquatic exercise is a good option for people of all ages and fitness levels. Children and young adults will enjoy exploring new ways to stay fit and have fun in the water. For older adults, the water's buoyancy reduces strain on joints and lowers the risk of injury, making it a safe choice for those suffering from arthritis or osteoporosis, or recovering from surgery.

People with mobility issues, even those confined to a wheelchair, find exercising in water more comfortable and less intimidating because it supports the body and reduces the risk of muscle or joint pain. Water exercise is a safe, effective, and enjoyable way for everyone to keep fit and healthy.

8. Aquatic Exercise and Stretching: Getting Started.

If you're ready to experience the benefits of aquatic fitness and water stretching exercises, there are several ways to get started, from private pools and hot tubs to community centers and gyms. While a backyard pool is a bigger investment, hot tubs can be more approachable in terms of price and space. You can find local hot tub prices by contacting a local dealer, but whether you invest in your own water oasis or rely on a public option, the first step is easy: Just dive in!

Check YouTube for online tutorials or start with a few of the exercises outlined below. Wear a comfortable swimsuit that you can move in, some lightweight water shoes to avoid slipping, and don't forget to slather on waterproof sunscreen.

Once you've tried some simple exercises using the water for resistance, you might want to purchase some basic equipment like water dumbbells or resistance bands to enhance your workouts. Don't forget to modify the exercises as needed to suit your fitness level and goals.

If you prefer the comradery and structure of an exercise class to working out solo, a group water aerobics class might be the best choice for you. Check with your local community center, gym, or YMCA for available sessions.

If you're a senior seeking to try water aerobics or an aquatic group exercise class, contact your gym or senior center for information. Or explore your options on the Silver Sneakers website, which is a program that provides free access to gyms and fitness classes for eligible adults aged 65 and up.

9. Five Simple Water Exercises You Can Do in a Pool.*

  • Water Walking or Jogging: Walk or jog across the shallow end of the pool, with the water no higher than mid-chest level, keeping your back straight and using your arms to help with balance. This exercise will get your heart pumping and enhance core and leg strength.
  • Leg Lifts: Position yourself in front of and facing the pool wall, holding on the edge for support, and lift one leg to the side, then bring it back down. Repeat for a set of 10-15 reps and switch legs. This is an effective way to target hips and thighs.
  • Arm Curls: Holding water dumbbells, stand in the water with your arms at your sides. While pinning your elbows to your body, curl your arms up to your shoulders and then lower them back down. This simple exercise will work your biceps and triceps.
  • Flutter Kicks: Hold onto the edge of the pool or use a kickboard and extend your legs behind you. Perform quick, small kicks to work your core and leg muscles.
  • Water Bicycle: In the shallow end, lean your back against the pool wall, extend your arms along the sides for support, and pedal your legs as if riding a bicycle for a simple leg/cardio workout.

10. Stretching Exercises for Hot Tubbers.

Stretching in a warm hot tub does more than feel good. Warm water hydrotherapy can enhance the effects of stretching and improve flexibility and mobility.

Here are a few simple stretches to try.* For the best results, hold each stretch for at least 15-30 seconds per side.

Neck Stretch:

  1. Sit comfortably with your back straight and hands resting on your thighs.
  2. Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder.
  3. Repeat, leaning your head to the other shoulder.

Shoulder Stretch:

  1. Sit or stand with shoulders relaxed.
  2. Reach one arm across your chest and use the opposite hand to gently press the arm towards your chest.
  3. Repeat with the opposite arm.

Torso Twist:

  1. Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor of the hot tub.
  2. Place one hand on the opposite knee and gently twist your torso, looking over your shoulder.
  3. Repeat, looking over the opposite shoulder.

Quadriceps Stretch:

  1. Stand in the hot tub and hold onto the edge for balance.
  2. Bend one knee and bring your heel up behind you until you can touch it.
  3. Use your hand to hold your ankle and gently pull it towards you.
  4. Repeat with the opposite leg.

Calf Stretch:

  1. Stand facing the wall of the hot tub and place both hands on it for support.
  2. Step one foot back, keeping it flat on the floor and your leg straight.
  3. Bend your front knee and lean forward slightly to stretch the calf of the back leg.
  4. Repeat with the opposite leg.

These stretches can help improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall relaxation. Always move gently and listen to your body to avoid overstretching.

The team at Caldera® Spas is always thinking up ways to improve the customer experience. A few weeks ago, Product Manager, Andy Ordonez, shared a new idea for product enhancement and credited his hot tub for the flash of inspiration.

We wanted to know more about Andy s backyard “think tank” so we asked him to share the details of his morning hot tub ritual.

He was happy to reveal his secrets. Here s what he had to say.

"I get some of my best ideas while soaking in my Caldera® spa. Greeting each day from my Geneva® model hot tub is a ritual I rarely miss, and I m not the only one who benefits. As the Product Manager for Caldera Spas, I leave the water not only calm and centered, but with creative new ideas to enhance the hot tub experience for our Caldera spa owners."

Andy told us that when he joined the Caldera team, he was already a fan of hot tubbing. He and his wife used their hot tub a couple of times a week to relax at the end of the day or ease sore muscles after a workout.

"I was excited to be working on a product that I personally enjoyed, but when I joined Watkins Wellness®, maker of Caldera Spas, as their new Product Manager, it didn t take long for me to realize I was only getting a fraction of the benefit my hot tub could provide. A lot of my co-workers followed the lead of our company President, Steve Hammock, and started each day with a 20-30-minute soak often before sunrise. I noticed that the team members who used their hot tubs before coming to work always seemed especially centered and focused, so I decided to challenge myself to use mine every single day for a month first thing in the morning. It didn t take long before I was hooked, and now I wouldn t dream of giving up my morning soak."

Andy shared a few examples of how hot-tubbing transforms his morning, and his entire day:

  • Climbing out of bed and stepping into his Caldera spa is such a comfortable transition that he finds himself looking forward to his alarm going off.
  • By pairing his morning soak with a meditation app, Andy can breathe deeply, clear his head, and add some mindful moments to his morning. Setting one water pump on “low” helps him to create the perfect environment for his morning meditation. He explains “I become more aware of the water around me, the flow and pattern of the different jets, and this adds to the calming, meditative effect of each soak.”
  • Crisp morning air and warm jets of water do wonders for Andy s mental and physical well-being a big improvement over his previous morning habit of scrolling through his phone to check social media and worry over the day s headlines.
  • Andy has discovered that his hot tub fosters clear-thinking and creativity. While he soaks, his subconscious works to solve problems and come up with ideas to improve all areas of his life. Andy has gotten into the habit of jotting down the insights that come to him in his mindful state.
  • Andy certainly doesn t think of his hot tub time as work, but he can t deny that soaking each day helps clear his mind, allowing space for inspiration to strike. He credits his daily hot tub ritual for many of his innovative new ideas for product improvements.
Modern outdoor hot tub illuminated with blue LED lights at night, featuring a water fountain and sleek design, set on a patio with ambient lighting.

Multi-colored lighting and a dramatic water feature add ambiance to late night star gazing! (Geneva model spa from Caldera s Utopia® Collection with Brownstone cabinet and Arctic White shell)

In addition to his early morning solo soaks, Andy also likes hot-tubbing with his wife in the evening. Their Caldera spa gives the couple a comfortable place to relax and share the details of their day. Plus, the warm water and soothing jets are the best way Andy knows to ensure a good night s sleep.

Now that he s part of the Caldera Spas team, Andy is always on the lookout for new ideas, features, and enhancements that will help his team deliver the best user experience for Caldera spa owners.

"Andy made us promise to relay this message to anyone who owns a hot tub or is considering a purchase, “Make a conscious effort to use your hot tub every day. Caldera spas are well insulated and energy efficient so you can leave them set to your ideal temperature that way your spa will always be ready when you are. Using my hot tub regularly has provided physical, mental, and emotional benefits. The physical benefits were expected, but it s really the mental and emotional benefits of being able to truly unplug and relax that have been the greatest. I wish everyone knew how transformative a daily soak can be."

"Long after passing the 30-day mark in his personal hot tub challenge, Andy is committed to his new morning ritual. He adds this final note. “I feel very lucky to own such a good hot tub. In addition to the benefits I have already shared, I am better able to understand what spa-ownership is like maintaining chemical balance, draining and refilling my spa water, etc. which is truly beneficial in my role as Caldera Spas Product Manager."

If you own a Caldera spa, why not start your own 30-Day Challenge and experience the transformation a regular daily soak can provide? If you re considering the purchase of a new spa, there s never been a better time to make your move. A hot tub will provide you and your loved ones with calm, wellness, and joy for years to come! Explore our models or contact your local dealer to arrange a consultation in person or through a live, virtual tour.

Here’s why you’ll be glad you waited

You like spending time at home, but for the last few months that's about all you've been doing. Throughout the summer, the need for social distancing put a damper on travel plans and made live sporting events and concerts off-limits. If you can't bear to look at another jigsaw puzzle or binge another television series and find yourself being nostalgic about bad office coffee and soccer carpools, the message is clear. It's time to find something, anything, that makes being at home fun again!

Life feels better when you're soaking in a Caldera® spa.

A Caldera spa at home provides a comfortable spot where the whole family can relax and take a break from endless emails and video calls. Greet each day with a cup of coffee and an invigorating soak, and later, melt away stress with a warm water massage that prepares you for a good night's sleep. A hot tub won't change the world, but in a few mindful minutes, it will help you face life's challenges with gratitude and grace.

When Can I Start?

Once you've decided to take the plunge into hot tub ownership, how do you turn your vision into reality? You've done your homework. You've compared models online, met with your local dealer (in the showroom or virtually), and learned all the ways hydrotherapy benefits the mind and body. Now you’re ready to place your order, and the whole household is eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new hot tub. So, how long will it be before you can take that first relaxing soak?

Bringing your hot tub vision to life!

Some Things are Worth the Wait.

Because of the current situation, demand for all kinds of backyard items and fitness equipment – including hot tubs, pools, patio furniture, bicycles and trampolines - has skyrocketed. At the same time, manufacturers are faced with reduced factory capacity due to social distancing mandates. Many are having difficulty getting parts and materials due to supply chain issues, so you’ll probably have to wait longer than you'd like for any of these popular items.

Watkins Wellness®, manufacturer of Caldera spas, continues to lead the industry in spas sold and manufactured. We're sending out multiple shipments each day, but wait times for Caldera spas are also impacted by the current situation.

No one likes waiting, but here are a few thoughts to help put things in perspective:

  • Waiting is hard, but settling for less than what you want is worse. Each time you admire the sleek design or experience our patented circuit massage, you'll be glad you didn't compromise. We think our team member, Scott Iverson, says it best. In this short video, he explains why your Caldera spa is worth the wait!
  • Right now, we could all use something to look forward to. While waiting for your hot tub might not seem like a benefit, many people find that delaying pleasure provides an extra happiness boost. You wouldn't expect to book a big family vacation and jet off the next day or host a big wedding a week after you say “yes” to a marriage proposal. Enjoy the days leading up to the delivery of your Caldera spa. Anticipating the first family soak or planning the details of your new daily ritual will make its arrival that much sweeter.
  • A Caldera spa is an investment in your mental and physical well being. You may have to wait a bit longer to receive your spa, but once it arrives, you'll enjoy the wellness benefits of a daily hot tub ritual for years to come.
  • Careful planning will ensure a stress-free installation. Take advantage of the extra time by exploring our handy pre-delivery guide. It includes everything you need to pick the perfect site for your spa, make sure it meets electrical requirements, and prepare for delivery.

Our production teams are doing everything possible to meet historically high demand while continuing to comply with government regulations to maintain a safe environment for our employees. We're communicating regularly with local dealers and alerting them when orders are ready to ship.

If you've already ordered your Caldera spa, we understand how tough it is to wait, and we appreciate your patience. If you have questions about your specific spa order, your dealer is the best point of contact to assist you. Thank you for your patience. Our goal is to get your hot tub to you as soon as we possibly can!

If you're shopping for a hot tub, don't wait for demand to slow down. The sooner you order, the sooner you can look forward to relaxing in your new Caldera Spa. Contact your local dealer to arrange a virtual or in-person consultation.

Life can be stressful. It feels like the demands of work, family, and home expand to fill up every available moment. You want to meditate, take up yoga, or adopt another mindful habit to relieve stress, but despite your good intentions, day after day, self-care falls to the bottom of your to-do list.

Being your best starts with being present and centered - but that's a nearly impossible state to attain if you're constantly rushing from one task to another. So what's the answer?

Taking care of yourself.

"If there should be a change in cabin pressure...put your oxygen mask on first before helping others." As a frequent flyer, I've heard this message so often that I usually tune it out, flipping through a magazine or selecting my in-flight playlist instead.

But last week I took the time to listen to the flight-attendant's safety instructions, and it struck me how the idea of putting your oxygen mask on first applies to day-to-day life. The connection is pretty obvious. Take care of yourself or you won't be able to help anyone else - at least not for long.

But this analogy has a flaw.

In my years of flying, I've never needed to put an oxygen mask on myself or anyone else.

Fortunately, I haven't experienced a situation that caused the masks to drop! But that's not true for self-care. There's no reason to wait until there's a "change in cabin pressure" in your life to start taking time for yourself.

Get proactive.

Self-care is essential to your mental, physical and emotional well-being. Ignore it, and life has a way of forcing the issue by throwing a major challenge in your path. You can proactively schedule restorative time, or risk having a health crisis take the choice out of your hands.

Once you've made the commitment to take care of yourself, it's time to get tactical. There are lots of ways to recharge. Jetting off on a tropical vacation or heading to a spa for a few days are appealing options, but scheduling a few calm, mindful, moments each day can be just as beneficial.

These steps can help you create a wellness ritual and stick to it:

  1. Let go of the "shoulds". Meditation is one way to feel present and centered - but if you get too fidgety sitting still for twenty minutes and you can't meditate, there are other options. This is your time, and there's no point committing to something that feels like a chore -- you have plenty of those already!
  2. Personalize a healthy ritual that allows you to unplug and be fully present. A short, mindful walk, watering your garden, star-gazing, meditating, immersing yourself in warm water, or doing a few yoga poses can be just what you need to slow down and get in touch with yourself - hitting your emotional reset button so you can be ready for the next task.
  3. Schedule strategically. Consider "bookending" your day with your wellness routine - scheduling time first thing in the morning and before bed. Set your alarm to go off early, and take that time for self-care before the rest of the household gets up. Then right before bed, take another few minutes to release the stress of your day and prepare for sleep.
  4. Remember that self-care isn't selfish, so don't feel guilty for one second. Those few minutes aren't just for you - family, friends, and co-workers benefit too. Being centered and present creates a ripple effect that touches every area of your life.

My personal wellness ritual.

One of the best investments I've made in my own well-being was to install a hot tub in my backyard. I wanted one for years, but felt I didn't have enough room. When I realized there are small hot tubs with two, three, and four seats that could easily integrate with my outdoor space, I made my move. Every morning and every evening, my own wellness ritual consists of spending fifteen minutes immersed in warm water, enjoying the moment as pulsating jets restore and invigorate me.

For a healthy habit you'll have no trouble sticking to, consider adding a hot tub - it's hard to make excuses when your daily wellness ritual feels as good as a warm water massage, and is just steps away. Getting started is easy! Explore Caldera hot tub models, or download a brochure. You can even contact your local dealer to schedule a test soak and experience the transformative power of hydrotherapy for yourself.

Reasons Why You and Your Family Should Unplug https://www.calderaspas.com/wellness-blog/reasons-why-you-and-your-family-should-unplug Wed, 26 Feb 2020 18:15:14 +0000 https://www.calderaspas.com/?post_type=wellness-blog&p=19725 It’s time to change the narrative and step away from the constant hustle and bustle of your day-to-day obligations to find more ways to unplug and relax while spending time in nature and enjoying family time.

The post Reasons Why You and Your Family Should Unplug appeared first on Caldera Spas.

Family time. Sometimes it seems like a luxury that you are rarely able to enjoy. Most days your life is go-go-go and by the time your head finally hits the pillow, you may feel like you haven't spent any time with your family at all.

If this sounds familiar to you, it's time to change the narrative and step away from the constant hustle and bustle of your day-to-day obligations to find more ways to unplug and relax while spending time in nature and enjoying family time. Real face-to-face time with each member of your family is invaluable every day and a hot tub is a wonderful way to make these interactions happen.

Consider this your first step.

The Benefits of Spending Time With Family.

Before we get into strategies you can employ to make the most of a hot tub and spend more time with your family, let's discuss how these interactions can benefit everyone in your family.

For starters, research shows that families that make a point to spend time together have children who generally earn better grades in school and are less likely to become involved in dangerous behavior.

In addition, a Journal of Family Psychology study found that living with involved siblings increased a child's likelihood of doing good deeds on their own, so make your family time an all-inclusive affair and everyone will benefit.

Supporting Continual Learning and Growing Through Family Time.

The activities you share as a family can present a wonderful opportunity to teach and help your child learn without the pressure they may feel at school. Your kids are learning from you all the time, including lessons on how to be a good parent themselves one day, so don't turn down the chance to set a good example.

Making Healthy Choices.

No, you won't be swimming laps in your hot tub. But even the most relaxing soak is still more active than an afternoon spent in front of the television or scrolling on a device.

Research shows that the more time you spend with your children, the greater influence you have over their future choices. Setting an example of healthy habits is essential, not only through balanced nutrition but also through regular exercise and relaxation activities. Incorporating activities like family hikes, bike rides, or even sports can build a foundation for a healthy lifestyle. After a day of activity, unwinding together in a hot tub offers a calming and beneficial way to soothe muscles and recharge, demonstrating the importance of balanced wellness. This time together helps foster both physical and emotional health, setting a lasting example for your children.

Ways To Unplug and Enjoy Family Time in Your Hot Tub.

OK, now that we've looked at some of the different ways spending time together can benefit your entire family, how do you make the most of that valuable family time in your hot tub? Here are a few ideas.

1. Make it a game

Yes, the family that plays together bonds together. Games like 20 Questions, Who Am I?, and Word Trail can be enjoyable for everyone and, better yet, adjusted to work for any age.

And if your family is a little more adventurous, you can also orchestrate your own version of hot tub idol, judging contestants based on talent and, of course, showmanship.

2. Bring a game

If word games aren't your thing and you prefer something of the more tactile variety, bring a board game into the hot tub with you. Travel versions of many popular board games are available making them the perfect size to bring along to the hot tub. Look for a game of entirely plastic components and you won't have to worry about a game piece or two that goes overboard during play.

3. Reinvent book club

Laying back and listening to a book while you relax doesn't have to be a solo activity. With wireless Bluetooth® technology, your entire family can enjoy a book from the comfort of your hot tub. This is another activity that can be easily scaled based on the ages of everyone involved. When the book - or chapter - is over, you can prolong the fun by discussing your opinions of everything you've just heard. The family member who makes the most insightful interpretation gets to pick the next book.

4. Put a new spin on movie night

The traditional Friday night movie will be even more enjoyable if you watch it from the relaxing comfort of your hot tub. Your viewing setup can be as unique as you are from hot-tub specific monitors that attach to your tub, to a conventional television connected to a wall or deck setting. Make a chart of who gets to pick the Friday night movie or set your choices to a different theme each week and you're ready to go.

5. The race is on

If your family is more on the competitive side, your hot tub can be a great space to host a race or two. Plastic ducks, floating boats ... whatever your object of choice, pick a start and finish point and let them go. Bonus points for the last one standing upright.

6. Enjoy the stars

Sometimes the best hot tub entertainment isn't happening in the tub itself, but right above you. On a clear night, don't be afraid to take a relaxing soak while gazing skyward. This can be a wonderful time to teach your children to recognize certain constellations or to simply ask them what the stars look like to them. The creativity of their answers is sure to keep you entertained throughout your soaking session.

Start Enjoying Relaxing Family Time in Your Hot Tub Today.

If the daily grind is leaving you without the family time you need, now's the perfect time to make a change. Scheduling family activities is a great way to preserve what's most important to you. And if you plan your activities to include your hot tub, your family will be all the more excited to maintain the date.

How a Hot Tub Can Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions https://www.calderaspas.com/wellness-blog/your-new-years-resolutions-how-a-hot-tub-can-help Tue, 11 Feb 2020 20:53:33 +0000 https://www.calderaspas.com/?post_type=wellness-blog&p=19699 Mindfulness is one of the most talked about concepts in the world of health and wellness today.

The post How a Hot Tub Can Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions appeared first on Caldera Spas.

]]>

With January well underway, many New Year’s resolutions have already been abandoned. But good habits don’t have to be a chore. Here are some ways that making a hot tub part of your daily ritual can keep your wellness transformation going strong in 2020.

Be more present

Mindfulness is one of the most talked about concepts in the world of health and wellness today. Being mindful can have a significant impact on both your physical and mental health, and many people have made it their goal to be more present in their daily lives. This often means committing to meditation or other forms of self-exploration and mindfulness training.

Hot tubs can help you stick to this resolution by providing an environment for mindfulness to flourish. You can use a guided meditation program played through your hot tub’s built-in speakers, or just focus your breathing while listening to the soothing sounds of the bubbling jets. By starting each morning with a warm soak, you can make time to center yourself and prepare for the day ahead. You can also take time at night to soak and reflect on the events of the day, helping you learn and grow from each new experience. In either case, a hot tub provides a venue for you to be more mindful and establish good habits going forward.

Slow down

Many people lead such hectic lives that often one of the top resolutions is just to slow down and carve out a little more personal time. Sometimes that means cutting back hours at work, dropping a social club or athletic class, or just having groceries delivered to save yourself a trip to the store. If your goal is to really slow down and relax, there may be no better solution than a hot tub.

Hot tubs offer a calming, relaxing activity that can help you detach from the stresses of the day. In turn, this can help reduce anxiety and leave you feeling more peaceful. You can use your hot tub to enjoy a soak at the end of a particularly stressful day, or you can make a hot tub session part of your everyday ritual. In either case, committing to using your hot tub more often can be a great way to unwind and achieve calm in your busy life.

Spend more time with family

Many people look to quit the rat race in hopes of spending more quality time with their family. This may mean more family game nights, committing to having a family dinner at least once a week or just being home more often. While getting everyone together can be difficult, here again a hot tub can be a useful tool in achieving your New Year’s resolution.

Hot tubs are a great way to spend quality time with the people you love. By putting phones aside and taking time to enjoy a soak together, a hot tub gives you a place away from screens and other distractions so real conversation can occur. This can help you reconnect with your kids, or give you and your partner the quiet time you need to strengthen your relationship.

Lose weight

The most common New Year’s resolutions all have to deal with fitness — eating better, getting more exercise and losing weight. This often means new gym memberships, diets, personal training sessions and home exercise equipment. But to truly accomplish your fitness goals, you need to create a lifestyle change that supports your efforts. A hot tub can be a helpful tool in sticking to your resolutions. Soaking in a hot tub is a form of passive exercise, and it can be a great addition to your new, healthier daily routine.

Soaking in hot water can help soothe muscle pain and increase circulation so your muscles recover faster. This means you’ll feel more rested and better prepared to keep hitting your exercise routine day after day. Hot tubs can also help reduce stress and improve sleep patterns, both of which can be key to losing weight. By making routine hot tub sessions part of your new lifestyle, you can increase your chances of sticking to your weight loss plans.

Get more sleep

If you want to get more sleep in the New Year, you’re not alone. Roughly a third of all Americans don’t get enough sleep, making a commitment to shut eye one of the top resolutions every year. While “go to bed earlier” seems like the simple answer to this problem, for many people, it just isn’t that easy. To get more restful sleep, you need to practice good sleep hygiene. This includes turning off phones and other devices an hour before bed, making sure your pillow and mattress provide effective support, and limiting the light in your bedroom. But it also means forming a ritual that is conducive for good sleep. And this is where a hot tub can provide big benefits.

Taking a soak in a hot tub can help set the stage for more restful sleep by helping to quiet your mind and prepare your body for bed. It can also help relieve the muscle pain or soreness that prevents some people from falling asleep quickly. By promoting relaxation and helping you form healthy sleep habits, a hot tub can help you get more sleep and wake up with the energy you need to tackle the rest of your resolutions.

The vast majority of New Year’s resolutions will be abandoned by Feb. 1. To increase your chances of seeing your plans to the end, consider adding a hot tub to your home. By providing space for you to focus on yourself and your health and wellness needs, a hot tub can help set you up for success in the new year.

Help make your New Year's resolutions stick by adding a hot tub to your home. Take the first step toward creating a daily wellness ritual by contacting your local dealer to arrange a test soak. Contact your local dealer today!

Between working toward professional and personal goals, and helping your kids be the best that they can be at school and in sports, it's often difficult to relax as a family and catch up. I get it. But even brief periods of connection can be satisfying—especially when you gather the family around your hot tub to play games that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age.

Spending time together in the warm water of your spa, without distractions and for pure enjoyment, is an ideal way to reconnect, laugh, and open doors to conversations. Together, you and your family can shake off the stress of the week and take advantage of dedicated quality time.

The Best Benefits of Hot Tub Games for the Whole Family

A home spa can do much more than help you get motivated and warmed up for physical exercise. By setting aside time to soak as a family, you can fit in some good mental exercise, too. After all, just as our bodies need exercise to stay in good health, so do our brains.

In addition to the fun and bonding benefits of games, many have cognitive benefits because they involve parts of the brain that deal with pattern recognition, vocabulary, and language. Recent studies suggest that memory, social skills, and quick thinking can be bolstered with intelligence training tasks, including playing word games that stimulate the brain. There's even evidence that such tasks and games could offset some symptoms of old age, such as forgetfulness, and help those with progressive dementia remain mentally active longer.

Choose from the Best Hot Tub Games for Your Next Spa Soak

When life gets busy, family schedules can collide, but a home spa can bring everyone together on a regular basis. The best hot tub games, including those I list below, can unite, engage and be adjusted to fit different ages and learning levels. If your favorite hot tub game isn't on this list, we want to hear about it! Leave a comment below.

Who Am I?

This is a classic game that's perfect for the hot tub, swimming pool, or a long road trip.

Smiling family of four relaxing together in an outdoor hot tub, with the mother kissing the father on the cheek, surrounded by lush greenery and a patio area.
  • The first player thinks of a person: either a member of the family, a famous person, someone they look up to, or perhaps a teacher.
  • The same person gives a single clue. For example, a phrase that person is known for or something like, “I'm older than a teenager.”
  • The second player then asks a question, such as, “Are you famous?”
  • The first player answers “yes” or “no.”
  • The next player asks a different question.
  • The game continues until the mystery person is revealed.
  • Once the mystery is solved, the player who guessed correctly goes next, and the game continues in the same way.

Hot Tub Idol

Based on classic road-trip singing games, this game will bring out the ham in any group. It can be played anywhere: the beach, the swimming pool, the car, or the hot tub.

  • The first person begins to sing a line from a popular song.
  • The second person then sings part of another song that contains at least one word of the first player's line.
  • The game continues until someone is stumped.

Fortunately/Unfortunately

This is a brain-teasing game of quick wit that even adults will enjoy.

  • The first player thinks of something fortunate and says it out loud to the group. For example, “Fortunately, it's summer.”
  • The second player then states something unfortunate about summer, such as, “Unfortunately, it's still cold outside.”
  • The next player then states something fortunate about the cold, such as, “Fortunately, I'm not cold; I'm in this warm hot tub.”
  • The next player states something unfortunate about the hot tub, such as, “Unfortunately, you'll have to get out of the hot tub soon.”
  • The game continues until someone is stumped or states something that makes no sense.

A fun true-or-false game that helps develop quick thinking skills, this one can help teens open up about events at school or give opinions about news stories that interest them. It can be played in a hot tub, swimming pool game, or on a road trip.

  • The game starts when the first player states something that could be either true or false, beginning with the words “I can't believe that ...” The idea can come from a hot topic or something that might or might not have happened at school or work.
  • The other players take turns guessing whether the statement is true or false.
  • After everyone has made a guess, the first player reveals whether the statement is true or false.
  • The people who guess correctly get two points. The first person to reach 20 points wins.

21 Questions

This is a family classic that can be played anywhere.

  • The first player thinks of a noun, but keeps it a secret, revealing to the other players only whether it's a person, place, or thing.
  • The other players can ask a total of 21 questions to help them guess the mystery word. Example questions:
    • Is this person male or female?
    • Is this person famous?
    • Is this place in the United States?
    • Is this place in our city?
    • Do you use this thing every day?
    • Is this thing larger than a loaf of bread?
  • The game continues until 21 questions have been asked or someone is able to guess the mystery person, place, or thing. The person to guess correctly goes next, and then the game continues in the same way. If no one guesses, the first player reveals the word and goes again.

Word Trails

This game is great for getting people to loosen up in the hot tub. A tricky brain exercise, it starts out easy, but becomes harder the longer the game goes on.

  • The first player states a word to start the game. For example, “the.”
  • The next player repeats that word and provides a second word that fits with the first. For example, the second player could say, “the car.”
  • The third player repeats the first two words, and then adds his own, extending the sentence. For example, “the car sped.”
  • The game continues until a player can't repeat the chain of words.
  • To make the game more difficult, each player can add two words instead of one.

Dance or Get Out

This game is simple, fun and provides players with a bit of exercise.

  • Anytime someone says, “It's time to dance!” everyone has to dance.
  • The last person to start dancing has to get out of the hot tub for five minutes.
  • The game continues for as long as everyone wants to play.

New Word Challenge

This educational game for kids of all ages offers parents an opportunity to gauge their kids' vocabulary skills and to share their own knowledge in a fun way. Let the children go first, so they gain confidence before the adults step in with a new word.

  • The first player states a word that might stump other players; the word should be appropriate for the players' age levels.
  • The other players take turns guessing the meaning of the word.
  • The person who guesses correctly goes next, choosing a new word.
  • If everyone fails to guess correctly, the first player reveals the meaning and then goes again.

As you regularly exercise to improve your health and strength, your body is in a constant state of regeneration. Workouts stress your muscles and joints, as well as your cardiovascular and respiratory systems. But there are ways to support and ease that stress so you can relax and avoid getting discouraged by soreness or exhaustion. Enjoying a thriving, active lifestyle means finding a productive balance between exertion and recovery.

Soaking in your home spa helps to find that perfect balance in a single, relaxing activity. A 20-minute soak can motivate and energize you before a workout, and relax you and promote recovery after a workout. Weaving a soak into your exercise regime can make reaching your goals more fun, too. Whether you aim for a competitive edge, want a therapeutic approach to weight loss, or strive for an overall active and healthy lifestyle, your hot tub can play an important role before and after your workouts.

How Do Frequent Hot Tub Soaks Enhance Your Exercise?

Hydrotherapy delivers a combination of great benefits. Let's look at the benefits that specifically relate to exercise, including preparation in the hot tub before a workout and recovery after a workout. Hot tub hydrotherapy does the following:

  • Increases Circulation. As you exercise, you stress your body in the process. So, you need healthy blood flow working for you to bring oxygen to your muscles. Warm water immersion improves circulation by dilating blood vessels as it decreases blood pressure. Getting in the hot tub before you exercise can kick this important function into gear, so you'll be warmed up and ready for your workout.
  • Supports Deep and Gentle Stretching. Stretching before your workout decreases your risk of injury, and stretching after helps to lengthen and relax stressed muscles and promote recovery. As you stretch in your hot tub, buoyancy takes some of the gravitational pressure off of your muscles and joints, and the warmth and pressure of the water help to deepen your stretches.

The following video demonstrates how to stretch your legs in the spa water. It's just one of many videos that show how to correctly stretch your body in your home spa.

  • Promotes Focus and Motivation. Soaking in a hot tub allows you to enhance your exercise with greater mind-body connection. It helps you slow down and gain better awareness of your body, decrease anxiety, and improve concentration. Moreover, research suggests that relaxation techniques can significantly improve your competitive performance by limiting the distractions brought by stress and anxiety, and by heightening your focus where it matters. A regular hot tub soak before or after working out can help motivate you to accomplish your fitness goals.
  • Burns Calories. You'll be glad to know that soaking in your hot tub counts as passive exercise, because warm water immersion speeds up calorie burn-even while your body is at rest. A great complement to active exercise, a soak also serves to motivate and prepare you for activity. You can start your exercises in the hot tub to warm your body prior to a workout, or use the time in the hot tub as your workout by jogging underwater or practicing spa yoga. Buoyancy and water resistance combined offer a low-impact exercise opportunity when land exercise is too intense for your joints, or when you're fatigued from workouts and need an active recovery day.
  • Relieves Mental, Physical, and Emotional Stress. Soaking in the hot tub before your workout can help you put work-related and other stress behind you, so you can focus on-and get excited about-your wellness routine ahead. A 20-minute soak after your workout can help dissolve muscle and joint stress brought on by exercise. Add to that the effect of endorphins released during your workout and the relaxation gained from a hot tub soak, and you have a recipe for balance in your life.
  • Eases Soreness and Promotes Recovery. Soaking in your hot tub after exercise can reduce swelling and inflammation, thanks to the warmth and pressure of the water. Your spa jets take this benefit a step further by offering targeted hydro-massage. Hot Tub Circuit Therapy® is a revolutionary practice designed to give you a deep massage right in your home spa, one muscle group at a time. As you work your way around the hot tub seats, you can target muscles from neck to toe. This stress and tension relief for your muscles stimulates the process of recovery and regeneration to help you relax and more quickly prepare for your next workout.

Ask Mike, a Caldera® spa owner, explains in the following video, "It's really a leg up on the competition in terms of competing in sports because I'm able to recover a lot quicker with the Caldera spa."

When it's hot outside or after a particularly intense workout, you may instead want to take advantage of cold water therapy. The CoolZone™ system allows you to set your spa water temperature to as low as 60 degrees for a more versatile hydrotherapy soak.

When Should You Use the Hot Tub-Before or After a Workout?

While you'll experience significant benefits using your hot tub before or after a workout, you'll see even greater benefits when you soak before and after a workout. Your exercise plan might look something like this:

  • 20-minute hot tub soak, including stretches
  • 20-minute run
  • 5-minute hydration break
  • 30-minute strength and conditioning routine
  • 10-minute cooldown, stretch, and hydrate
  • 20-minute soak for relaxation and jet massage

On days when you don't have a lot of time for exercise, you may want to choose a hot tub soak only before or after your workout. If you struggle with motivation, warming up, or with sustaining energy late in your workout, soaking in your spa before exercise may be the ideal option. If you experience post-workout soreness, fatigue, or a long recovery time in between workouts, soaking in the hot tub after exercise might be the right choice.

Your home hot tub opens the door to a personal relaxation retreat and is a tool for balance in your active lifestyle. Let your spa help you find what works best for your exercise routines and goals.
